Hi there! I’m Yağmur, an evolutionary biologist working at the Groningen Institute for Evolutionary Life Sciences (GELIFES) of the University of Groningen as a tenure-track assistant professor.
Pinned news: Our special issue “Ageing outside of the box: insights from unusual and non-model species” in the Journal of Evolutionary Biology is now accepting papers! See here for more details.
Research
I am broadly interested in applying evolutionary thinking and theoretical approaches (such as mathematical modelling & computer simulations) to biological questions. I primarily work on cancer, ageing, life-history evolution, and cultural evolution.
Teaching
I am interested in teaching innovations and think a lot about how to incorporate active learning strategies, make teaching more inclusive, and adapt education to changing conditions (e.g. AI). I’m active in teaching organisation, teach a variety of courses at BSc and MSc levels, and supervise BSc and MSc students.
Dissemination
I regularly (co-) organise and participate in events that create opportunities to engage with colleagues and the public. In addition to academic conferences, I am keen to be a part of initiatives geared towards a broader audience. Feel free to contact me for specific ideas and requests!
